Route Overview
The standard route from Bikaner to Jaisalmer follows NH 15 (now renumbered as parts of NH 11 and NH 15):
- Bikaner to Kolayat — 50 km. You exit Bikaner on the Jaisalmer Road. Kolayat is a small pilgrimage town with a sacred lake and temples. Worth a brief stop if you have time.
- Kolayat to Phalodi — 100 km. The road passes through increasingly desert terrain. Phalodi is a good stop for fuel and tea. It is also famous for the Phalodi fort and salt lakes.
- Phalodi to Pokhran — 90 km. This is the most dramatic stretch — wide open desert on both sides. Pokhran is historically significant as the site of India's nuclear tests (1974 and 1998). Pokhran Fort is visible from the highway.
- Pokhran to Jaisalmer — 110 km. The final stretch. The terrain becomes more sandy with occasional dunes visible from the road. As you approach Jaisalmer, the golden fort emerges on the horizon like a mirage — an unforgettable first impression.
Total driving time is approximately 5 to 6 hours. The road is a well-maintained national highway throughout, though some stretches can have truck traffic.

1. Gajner Palace & Lake (32 km from Bikaner)
Start your road trip with a visit to this beautiful lakeside palace on the Bikaner-Jaisalmer highway. Built by Maharaja Gaj Singh, it is surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary. You can see migratory birds (winter), deer, and peacocks around the lake. The palace grounds are serene and perfect for morning photography.
2. Kolayat (50 km)
An ancient pilgrimage town centered around a sacred lake with 52 ghats. The lake is considered as holy as Pushkar by some devotees. The Kapil Muni Temple here is one of the few temples dedicated to Sage Kapil in India. During the Kolayat Fair (on Kartik Purnima in November), the ghats come alive with thousands of devotees and floating diyas (oil lamps).
3. Phalodi (150 km)
A small desert town known for its fort, opium museum, and the famous Kheechan Bird Sanctuary where thousands of demoiselle cranes (kurja) migrate every winter (September to March). If you are traveling in the right season, a quick detour to Kheechan (5 km from Phalodi) is absolutely worth it — seeing thousands of cranes feeding at dawn is a surreal experience.
4. Pokhran (240 km)
Known as the site of India's nuclear tests, Pokhran has a historical fort with a small museum. The town has a few restaurants and dhabas — a good place for a late lunch break if you are timing your drive. The Pokhran Fort offers views of the surrounding desert.

Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila)
The only living fort in India — people still live inside its walls. Built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, the golden sandstone fort glows at sunset. Walk through the narrow lanes, visit the Jain temples inside, and enjoy rooftop café views. Entry fee: Rs 50 (Indians), Rs 250 (Foreigners).
Patwon Ki Haveli
