Devi Kund Sagar is the royal cremation ground and cenotaph complex of the Bikaner royal family, located 8 km east of the city. This atmospheric site features dozens of beautifully carved sandstone and marble chhatris (cenotaphs) of the rulers of Bikaner, from Rao Bikaji (the founder of Bikaner) to the later Maharajas. The most impressive cenotaph belongs to Maharaja Surat Singh, adorned with fine carvings and painted ceilings. Several sati stones mark where royal women performed self-immolation. The complex, set against the stark Thar Desert landscape, offers a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into Bikaner's royal past and the memorial architecture traditions of Rajasthan.

History

Devi Kund Sagar has served as the royal cremation site since the founding of Bikaner in the 15th century by Rao Bika. Over the centuries, elaborate cenotaphs were built to honor each ruler, with architectural styles evolving from simple structures to ornate sandstone and marble masterpieces. The tradition of building royal chhatris continued until the early 20th century.
