Havelis of Bikaner Walking Tour (बीकानेर की हवेलियां पैदल यात्रा)

Bikaner's Old City is home to some of the most magnificent merchant havelis in Rajasthan, rivaling those of Shekhawati and Jaisalmer. This walking tour covers the major haveli clusters, starting with the famous Rampuria Group of Havelis — a row of ornately carved red sandstone mansions built by the Rampuria family between the 15th and 19th centuries. The tour continues to the Daga Chowk Havelis, Kothari Haveli, Mohta Haveli, and the elegant Bhanwar Niwas heritage hotel. Each haveli showcases different periods and styles of Rajasthani merchant architecture, featuring intricate jharokhas (projecting balconies), carved stone jali screens, painted facades, and ornamental doorways. The havelis reflect the immense wealth that Bikaner's merchant class accumulated through trade along ancient caravan routes connecting Gujarat ports to Central Asia.

History

Bikaner's havelis were built by wealthy Marwari merchant families — Rampurias, Dagas, Kotharis, and Mohtas — who amassed fortunes through trade during the Mughal and British periods. The haveli-building tradition spanned from the 15th to the early 20th century. Unlike Jaisalmer's yellow sandstone havelis, Bikaner's are predominantly built from local red sandstone, giving them a distinctive warm glow.
